San Francisco/Silicon Valley – The Florence of the Italian Renaissance?
For much of the 15th and 16th centuries, Florence was the centerpiece of a return or re-birth to humanism. Similarly to how Florence became the zona franca where ancient met modern, East met West, and the exited mind was free to try out what it liked; today the San Francisco Bay Area (which includes Silicon Valley and San Francisco) represent a contemporary zona franca of the “digital renaissance”. This is a massive social experiment opening all closed doors to rigidity, dogmatism and intolerance in the areas of scientific research and technological innovation. Embracing the diversity of problem solving approaches, the Bay Area leads the way as Florence did during the Renaissance in the creation of new economies, new business models and the introduction of disruptive innovations in our daily lives.
